Christian Standhardinger, the consensus number 1 pick in the upcoming PBA Draft, might be on his way to San Miguel after reports surfaced that Kia is trading its selection to the Beermen.
Is San Miguel on its way to acquire Kia's no. 1 pick in the upcoming PBA Draft?
That appears to be the case in a report by Interaksyon's Rey Joble Saturday as the Picanto have agreed to trade away this year's top selection in exchange for San Miguel's Jay-R Reyes, Rashawn McCarthy, Keith Agovida, and the Beermen's no. 12 pick in the same draft.
According to Joble's report, Alaska's Dickie Bachmann, the PBA's incoming PBA board vice chairman, along with several others, have expressed their concern over Kia's competitiveness --- or lack thereof --- in the PBA.
"Are they here to compete or not?" Bachmann said per Joble. "This is really alarming. We're raising this issue for the good of the PBA."
Kia, who joined the PBA three seasons ago with Blackwater, has had a rather lackluster history when it comes to first round picks.
The team, then known as the Sorento, selected Manny Pacquiao with its initial first round pick upon joining the league. The franchise then selected Troy Rosario second overall in the 2015 PBA draft only to trade him almost immediately to Talk 'N Text.
Renamed as the Mahindra Enforcer, the franchise made its first playoff appearance in the 2016 Governors' Cup however, the following season, the team's top-2 local scorers in KG Canaleta and Aldrech Ramos were traded away in separate deals.
The 2017 PBA Draft, where Fil-German Christian Standhardinger expected to be this year's top selection, will be on October 29.
