Tigerscribes, Spurs open PGBL campaign on high note

Defending champion TNT Tigerscribes and Globalport Spurs launched their campaigns in style by prevailing over separate rivals last Monday at the start of the PGBL Season 4 Willie Caballes Cup at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
With Karlo Sacamos leading the charge, the Tigerscribes subdued the Dymons, 61-46, in a rematch of the Season 3 finals, while the Spurs, the Season 1 champions, opened their season with a 59-51 triumph over the BEST Center Pioneers.
Sacamos scored a career-best 23 points and added four rebounds and three steals, while Cedelf Tupas wound up with 15 points, including three triples in the second half for the Tigerscribes.
Aldo Aviñante stood at the forefront of the Spurs' attack with 26 points and nine rebounds, while Budoy Lagunzad dished out double-double outing of 11 points and 13 boards.
Top pick Arnold Cagang finished with 24 points for the Pioneers, with 12 coming in the final frame, while frontcourt partners Reuben Terrado and Christian Jacinto scored 10 apiece and combined for 23 of their team's 51 rebounds.
The Tigerscribes also got seven points and 11 rebounds from reigning Most Valuable Player Diego Dela Paz.
Veteran forward Jonas Terrado paced the Noli Cortez-mentored Dymons with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Rookies Paul Ryan Tan and Mix Gatpandan added eight points each.
Gracing the opening rites of the four-team presented by the Philippine Basketball Association and the Philippine Sports Commission were Malou Caballes, wife of the late Manila Bulletin assistant sports editor, BEST Center founder Nic Jorge and PBA deputy commissioner Ricky Santos.
