Kia trade plot thickens as SMB seems to beat TNT in deal
They didn’t specifically go to San Miguel and just said, “San Miguel I want to trade this, I give it to you.” Hindi mayroon silang nakausap na iba. And eventually thinking about it they ended up with San Miguel -- PBA commissioner Chito Narvasa

BOCAUE, Bulacan --- The plot thickens for the controversial trade between San Miguel Beer and Kia Picanto.

It seemed like Talk ‘N Text was also interested in acquiring Kia’s No. 1 pick in the 2017 PBA Draft set on Sunday.

PBA Commissioner Chito Narvasa bared that TNT management was also in the fray for the top overall pick that eventually went to its bitter rival SMB in exchange for veteran Ronald Tubid, Jay-R Reyes, Rashawn McCarthy and the Beermen’s 2019 first round pick.

“I want to remove any doubt. I want to be transparent, I’ve always been,” said Narvasa, who approved the trade Friday before the 2017 PBA Governors’ Cup at the Philippine Arena here.

“I talked to Kia and I said, “Paano ba nangyari ito?” Because I was looking into the procedures mayroon talagang konti-konting kailangang baguhin. They said that they have received offers from other teams also,” he explained.

“They didn’t specifically go to San Miguel and just said, “San Miguel I want to trade this, I give it to you.” Hindi mayroon silang nakausap na iba. And eventually thinking about it they ended up with San Miguel,” added Narvasa.

But the commissioner also revealed that TNT has been maneuvering even before consensus top pick Christian Standhardinger submitted his draft application.

“(Standhardinger) called me and he said, “Boss can my agent be the one to submit to you my requirements?” Sabi ko OK. So in-email sa akin then pina-print ko,” said Narvasa.

“I don’t remember if it was that day or the next day pero may nag-submit din ng application para kay Christian,” he continued. “Sabi ko sino magsa-submit niyan kasi akala ko sa akin dumiretso.”

It turned out that TNT official Magnum Membrebre was the one who submitted another application for Standhardinger.

“Ang sabi ko, “Eh bakit siya isa-submit ni Magnum yun? Eh ako ang kausap?” he said. “Eh pinabayaan ko na.”

“All these things ngayon tapos dumating sa akin ‘yung envelope (ng trade),” Narvasa said. “Pagkita ko San Miguel and Kia. Kaya nagulat ako, paano nakuha ng San Miguel ‘yun. Then all these controversies came out.”

Narvasa almost killed the trade deal as he deemed it a little lopsided but after a few talks from both camps and some revisions, he approved the exchange.

As for KaTropa, the Beermen just beat them to the punch.
