Is Filipino-German Christian Standhardinger the Pinoy version of former NBA player Rick Barry?
Filipino-German Christian Standhardinger is adding something new to his repertoire heading into the new Asean Basketball League (ABL) season.
The Hong Kong Eastern cager showed his ‘unconventional’ one-handed free throw shooting style Thursday in the Long Lions’ 98-85 tune-up match win over NLEX at the FCL gym in Xavierville.
“You know, I’m working on some stuff. Trying to figure some stuff out. But I’m pretty confident that I’m going on the right direction,” said Standhandinger, the 2017 PBA top pick of San Miguel Beer.
The 6-foot-8 power forward will finish his ABL contract with repeat-seeking Hong Kong before suiting up for the Beermen at the middle of the Commissioner’s Cup next year.
But for now, Standhandinger wants to perfect his unorthodox style of free throw much like the successful underhand free throw shooting technique of former NBA player Rick Barry.
“I think I’m gonna stick with it. It feels good and I like it,” said Standhandinger.
The Gilas Pilipinas standout admitted that he has been struggling on his free throw shooting so he decided to find a 'better' shooting form at the foul line.
“I’m trying a lot of things out. I’m a basketball player when you watch me play I’m not very conventional, you know I’m just efficient,” he said. “It’s just the same thing with the free throw, it has not been working for me so good in the last two years so I’m figuring out something unconventional out.”
“I hope it works better for me,” Standhadinger added. “I have a good feeling regardless of today.”
Hong Kong will open its title-retention bid on November 19 against Alab Pilipinas at the MOA Arena. Action will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.
