8:00 PM – Alab Pilipinas vs Hong Kong

Alab Pilipinas didn’t mince words about where they think they stand at the start of the 2017-2018 Asean Basketball League.

Asked who the biggest threat is to defending champion Hong Kong, team manager Charlie Dy answered, full of confidence, “It’s gonna be us.”

The Filipinos will go all-out to prove Dy’s claim correct as they welcome Hong Kong and Filipino-German Christian Standhardinger to open their campaign on Sunday at the MOA Arena.

The Philippines has prepared the first challenge to the reigning titlists beginning at 8:00 PM and all of the action will be on S+A, S+A HD, and

While they are confident about their chances, Alab made it clear that Hong Kong remains the favorite in the tournament. “They’re the champions and until somebody beats them, they have to be the favorites,” first-year head coach Jimmy Alapag said.

While Alapag will be put to the test to commence his head coaching career, he will have reigning and defending Local MVP Ray Parks Jr. as well as American reinforcements Ivan Johnson and Reggie Okosa backing him up.

And even better for the rookie mentor, his debut will come in the very same place where he led the national team to a silver medal finish in the 2013 FIBA Asia. “MOA Arena will always have special memories for me. That place will always have a little bit of sentimental value to myself and really, our country,” he shared.

He then continued, “To have an opportunity to have our first game there and my first game as a head coach, I’m just excited. We’re expecting a great crowd!”
