Standhardinger clutch as HK holds off Alab Pilipinas
Fil-German forward Christian Standhardinger buried two clutch baskets for Hong Kong, the first a jumper to put the champs up, 90-86, and the final one a being layup to seal the final tally.

Hong Kong Eatern's championship composure prevailed.

The defending Asean Basketball League champions scored big road win over Tanduay Alab Pilipinas Sunday, taking a close 92-89 decision at the MOA Arena to start the league's eight season.

Losing 15-point lead, Hong Kong dropped a 9-0 run early in the fourth quarter, turning a 73-74 deficit into an 82-74 advantage to restore order against Alab.

The Philippine team tried to rally again in the final two minutes and change, making it to within one point in the last 10 seconds following an and-one play from reigning local MVP Ray Parks Jr., but the Eastern Sports Club managed to hang tough for the victory.

Fil-German forward Christian Standhardinger buried two clutch baskets for Hong Kong, the first a jumper to put the champs up, 90-86, and the final one a being layup to seal the final tally.

Josh Urbiztondo had a chance to send the game in overtime with five seconds to go but his halfcourt heave went in and out.

"I think the first half really hurt us," rookie Alab head coach Jimmy Alapag said.

"It was a tale of two halves. I think if we would've played with the sense of urgency like we did in the second half in the first half, I think the outcome could have been different. But you give credit to Hong Kong, they're the champion team for a reason," he added.

Behind the trio of Standhardinger, Marcus Elliot, and Tyler Lamb, Hong Kong took control late in the opening period and would continue to do so until early in the first. During the span, the defending ABL champions led by as many as 15 points.

However, Parks Jr. would spark a second-half rally for Alab that ultimately fell short.

Standhardinger impressed playing in front of his home crowd albeit with the opposing team, dropping 26 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, and a pair of steals. Elliot, the reigning World Import MVP had 25, 19 in the first half, on top of eight rebounds and nine assists. Parks' rival Lamb added 23 for  Hong Kong.

Import Reggie Okosa led Alab Pilipinas with 28 points and 12 rebounds while Parks was good for 17. Ivan Johnson likewise finished with 17 points to go along with 15 rebounds but he fouled out late in the fourth period.
