The Philippines and Japan are traditional basketball rivals in the Asian basketball scene.

Gilas 3.0 beat the Akatsuki Five in the second round of the Asian Championships two years ago and again in the semifinals.
Japan will be out for revenge this time around as the opening round of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers kick off Friday in Tokyo.
