At least for the PBA preseason, Kia's unconventional ways work.

And they work against San Miguel of all teams.

The Picanto scored a shocking 78-75 win over the Beermen Tuesday at the Claret School in Quezon City, taking a victory against the team that took their number 1 overall pick in the previous PBA Draft.

Kia stepped on the gas in the third, taking a 15-point lead, 57-42, before the Beermen quickly responded to make it a game.

However, San Miguel's comeback would fall short as Alex Cabagnot and Arwind Santos each missed a shot from deep that would have forced overtime.

Jackson Corpuz and Phillip Paniamogan kept the Kia engine going, scoring 12 and 11 points respectively. For San Miguel, Marcio Lassiter dropped 16 but only shot 33 percent from the field. Cabagnot had 15 points.

In the other PBA preseason game over at the Upper Deck Gym in Ortigas, Phoenix defended "home court" by burning the Alaska Aces, 89-85.

The Fuel Masters bounced back from an overtime loss to Rain or Shine yesterday while the Aces dropped to 0-2 so far in the pocket tournament that also feature the NLEX Road Warriors.

Sniper Matthew Wright fired 17 points to lead Phoenix while Calvin Abueva was still in his beastly ways, scoring 22 points in a losing cause.
