D-League Draft top pick Owen Graham is being compared to PBA 40 Greatest member Arwind Santos
For the second straight season, AMA Online Education had the top pick in the PBA D-League Draft.
Unlike a year ago when they went with the obvious choice in Jeron Teng, however, AMA pulled off a surprise with little-known Filipino-Canadian Owen Graham in the 2017 rookie selection process on Wednesday.
In a pool headlined by local collegiate superstars Alvin Pasaol and Arvin Tolentino, it was the 6-foot-4 Graham whose name was called first.
For head coach Mark Herrera, it was all about familiarity. “Si Owen Graham kasi, he played for me for almost one year na sa NAASCU, Fr. Martin’s (Cup), and NCRAA. Kabisado ko na yung bata so alam na alam na natin kakayahan niya going to the D-League,” he said.
Apparently, Graham had already been suiting up for AMA in a number of collegiate leagues.
Herrera went on to say that he believed his prized ward will pan out as he can play all positions but center. As he put it, “He can play spots 2 to 5. All-around player siya parang si Arwind Santos.”
He then continued, “Hardworking siya sa defense plus he can score.”
Being compared to a member of the PBA 40 Greatest is no small thing, but the AMA mentor is nothing but confident Graham can come through.
After all, the 25-year-old will have double-double machine Andre Paras as well as fellow rookies Richard Escoto, Barkley Ebona, and Philip Manalang flanking him.
The 2018 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup tips off on January 18 at Pasig’s Ynares Sports Arena.
