Matt Salem and J-Jay Alejandro will remain teammates in the PBA D-League
J-Jay Alejandro and Matt Salem’s partnership is not yet over.
The now-graduated National University standouts will be taking their partnership to the PBA D-League as teammates for Go for Gold-College of St. Benilde.
“Yes, we’re gonna play for them,” Salem said.
Blazers head coach TY Tang later confirmed the development.
Of course, still getting to play together was one of the reasons for their decision. “Even as early as (UAAP) Season 79, Jay and I always talked that we’re going to continue playing on the same team,” the sweet-shooting forward said.
Salem averaged 8.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.2 steals in his last year as a Bulldog wherein he was downed by dengue at one point. Still, his size and stoke are nothing but assets to any squad.
Partner-in-crime Alejandro had a way better send-off season with per game counts of 17.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 1.3 steals.
The now all-around guard will be tasked to steady the backcourt for a Go for Gold-CSB side which only has young Unique Naboa and JJ Domingo as ballhandlers.
Alejandro and Salem were both reeled in by Tang assistant Paolo Layug. “They have a good coaching staff. They have a good culture and work ethic,” Salem said of a staff that includes Layug, Ali Peek, and Charles Tiu.
The Filipino-Canadian also mentioned how the stint with the upstart Blazers will do nothing but prepare him for his eventual professional career.
Salem, Alejandro, and Go for Gold-CSB go to war in the 2018 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup tipping off on January 18 at Pasig’s Ynares Sports Arena.
