Losing a double-digit advantage and even giving up the lead altogether, the Elasto Painters recovered in time to eke out an 82-79 victory over the TNT KaTropa in the 2018 Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome Friday.
Holding on to a three-point lead, ROS appeared to be headed for disaster after Raymond Almazan lost the ball with 18 seconds left.
However, Almazan more than made up for it on the other end as the towering center made sure his Gilas teammate and TNT ace Jayson Castro would not be able to get a decent attempt at a game-tying three-point shot allowing the Painters to walk away with the victory.
"Sabi ko nga sa mga players before the game was we practiced hard for one month and a half, to prepare for this conference, wag lang nila sayangin. Dami pa ring lapses but I think we're gonna get better," head coach Caloy Garcia said.
"We're just lucky that they missed the shot at the end," he added.
Taking advantage of a TNT team that was firing blanks almost all game long, the Elasto Painters opened up an 11-point lead at the end of the third period, 62-51.
But behind the ageless Kelly Williams, the KaTropa wouold mount a spirited comeback, even taking the lead, 68-66, after a layup from Ryan Reyes.
ROS would immediately respond though, firing 10 straight points to regain control before holding on for the win.
Four players scored in double-figures for the Elasto Painters led by Beau Belga with 14 points. Chris Tiu added 12 while Gabe Norwood and Raymond Almazan finished with 11 points each.
Jayson Castro led the way for TNT with a near triple-double, firing 18 points on top of nine rebounds and 10 assists in a losing cause. RR Pogoy added 16 and Anthony Semerad drilled 13 points. Williams was good for 11, nine in the fourth period.
