Mike Tolomia was nothing but a bright spot for Meralco in their loss to defending champion San Miguel
Mike Tolomia turned in his best game in a Meralco uniform on Wednesday at the Ynares Arena in Antipolo.
Dropping 21 points on top of six assists and four rebounds, the second-year guard was a big reason why the Bolts were able to make their matchup with defending champion San Miguel interesting despite falling behind by as much as 22 in the second quarter.
Tolomia’s breakout in navy blue was just what the Bolts needed with starting guards Baser Amer and Garvo Lanete only combining for 17 points in 6-of-23 shooting.
“Mike’s a big part of our team. That’s why we got him, because he can score,” head coach Norman Black said post-game. “He’s really a combo guard, but basically for us, he’ll be an attack guard. He’ll be a guy who’s out there looking to score points.”
Black and Meralco traded for Tolomia late last season.
And slowly but surely, the 5-foot-11 scorer has been giving the Bolts have been looking for.
Talking about the five triples he made out of nine attempts, Tolomia said he was just doing what his mentor asked of him. “Yun ang binibigay ng depensa ng San Miguel e. Pag ‘di ko itira yun, magagalit din si coach Norman kasi libre,” he said.
While his best game in a Meralco uniform ended in a loss, the combo guard said how they never gave up against the fully-loaded Beermen is still something positive. “San Miguel ang standard ng All-Filipino kaya para dumikit kami sa sobrang lakas na team tulad nila, it’s a positive thing,” he expressed.
