First time naming talunin ang Rain or Shine, first time din namin manalo sa Cuneta -- Blackwater coach Leo Isaac
The saying, 'there's a first time for everything' rang true for Blackwater.
More than winning their first game in the 43rd season of the PBA after a sour start in the Philippine Cup, Blackwater’s 92-87 win over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters Friday at the Cuneta Astrodome was extra special for the Elite.
It took the Dioceldo Sy franchise three years to finally pluck a win over the Elasto Painters in a venue that has been brutal to Blackwater in the past three seasons.
“Parang first time naming talunin ang Rain or Shine. This is our first time na talunin ang Rain or Shine dito sa PBA simula ng pumasok ang Blackwater,” said Elite coach Leo Isaac.
“Parang first time din ata naming manalo sa Cuneta,” added Isaac, who himself has a losing 0-18 overall record at the Pasay City venue that started since he coached Barako Bull back in 2009 before the win.
Blackwater dropped its previous 11 matches against RoS since joining the league back in 2014 and were 0-10 overall at the historic Pasay City venue.
But the win in a duel that saw 26 lead changes and nine deadlocks needed a lot from Isaac’s young crew.
The game was tight until the last two minutes before Mac Belo, who’s slowly getting his groove back after a tough Season 42 that saw him saddled with knee injury, nailed a triple with under two minutes left to create a 90-85 separation.
A stop and a pair of charities by Michael DiGregorio sealed the win for the Elite, who bounced back from an opening day 98-103 loss to Meralco a week ago.
Belo finished with 25 points including a 5-of-9 clip from behind the arc while Digregorio and rookie Raymar Jose scored 23 and 12 makers, respectively.
“We’re hoping that we could have a good new year and with this win we hope that that it would boost our campaign here in the All-Filipino,” said Isaac.
