Yung defense namin parang bata -- Alas on blowout loss

We've got six keys to win, checkin natin lahat... lahat wala kaming nagawa. Yu’ng pick and roll defense namin, parang bata -- Phoenix coach Louie Alas
Phoenix’s terrible decision-making on offense and passive defense made Rain or Shine look good.
Fuel Masters head coach Louie Alas was furious with his team’s performance as Phoenix absorbed a 99-120 beating against the Elasto Painters in the 43rd PBA Philippine Cup Wednesday at the Big Dome.
The mentor admitted that he felt that the game was already out of hand after his squad gave up 39 points in the opening period alone.
“Bad decision-making namin offensively fuels their transition offense,” said Alas.
Rain or Shine converted Phoenix’s 19 turnovers to 30 points and outran the Fuel Masters to cop 22 fastbreak points.
“First half 72% field goal (ang Rain or Shine), paano ka naman mananalo dyan? Defensive team ang gusto mong maging trademark mo, gi-give up ka ng 39 points in the first quarter, that’s bad,” said Alas, whose squad’s next assignment is on Saturday against Magnolia. “I just told them, ‘If we will have the same attitude on Saturday expect the same score.’ So it will be a test of character.”
Ed Daquioag toyed with Phoenix’s defense as he scored 21 points to pace the Elasto Painters while James Yap, who was just averaging 3.3 points in three games, scored 20 points in an 8-of-10 clip from the field.
If not for a bad fall on an and-one play off rookie Jason Perkins with 7:33 left in the third, Daquioag, the second-year guard out of UST, would’ve done more damage against Phoenix. He never got to shoot his bonus free throw and sat out the rest of the game.
“(Si) Daquioag parang nagra-round robin. Sabi ko, ‘What kind of a defensive team are we? We have to shape up.’ Talagang kapag ang sama ng opensa ko, di kami maka-stop sa depensa,” said Alas.
“We've got six keys to win, checkin natin lahat... lahat wala kaming nagawa. Yu’ng pick and roll defense namin, parang bata. Sabi ko. ‘'Yan ba ang gusto niyong defensive identity natin? Giving up 39 points in one quarter? We're not like that,’” he added.
The Elasto Painters got their game going to build some separation early, and their lead ballooned to 86-47 in the third.
“Nu’ng first three plays pa nga lang, nag-timeout ako ng mabilis eh. Sabi ko, ‘Guys, we're very passive.’ Dalawang TOs agad ‘yun,” said Alas. “First quarter nakadalawang timeouts kaagad ako just to stop the bleeding.”
Alas pointed that he has to address the problems they had against the Elasto Painters as they prepare for Magnolia.
“Unang-una ‘yung shot selection namin. Kasi kapag nagmintis ka makikita mo kukunin mo na lang yung inbound su-shoot na yan. We need to adjust that and defensively kailangang pagbutihin namin ‘yung transition defense naming,” he said. “We need to improve on that several notches higher.”
