The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League is all set for its opening on Jan. 25 at the Araneta Coliseum.

The MPBL, which is founded and owned by Senator Manny Pacquiao, will have 10 teams and will feature a home-and-away format similar to the old Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA).

For now in the inaugural Anta-Rajah conference, the ten teams that will compete are Paranaque, Caloocan, Bataan, Batangas, Bulacan, Imus, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Quezon City, and Valenzuela.

In the future, the league is planning to expand and include teams from Visayas and Mindanao.

"This will support the youth who are interested in the sport. This will bea great help to them. From the grassroots, we are going to discover good players," Pacquiao said in a statement.

"Hindi naman kami nakikipag-compete sa ibang liga, ito ay ambag, tulong din sa paog-promote ng basketball dito sa Pilipinas," he added.

The league, in partnership with ABS-CBN, will air games live on S+A every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 7-11 in the evening.

For the opening on Jan. 25, Paranaque and Caloocan will play on neutral grounds at the Araneta Coliseum.

Aside from the opening ceremonies and the league's first game, a raffle will also be held for those in attendance with a brand-new car serving as grand prize. 10 motorcycles will be given away as consolation.
