Beermen pull away late against Global to keep record intact
The reigning three-time All-Filipino champs took control in the fourth, extending their winning run to five games and remain on top of the standings.

San Miguel's superior star power comes through once again.

The Beermen withstood another challenge in the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup, this time taking a gritty 107-93 decision over the Globalport Batang Pier Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

The reigning three-time All-Filipino champs took control in the fourth, extending their winning run to five games and remain on top of the standings.

Down three, 80-83, with 6:35 to go, San Miguel went on a sizzling 21-2 run anchored by June Mar Fajardo and Brian Huruela to take a 101-85 lead with 1:37 remaining.

At one point, the Beermen reeled off 18 unanswered points to completely take the fight out of the Batang Pier who coming in were clicking defensively, limiting their last two opponents to less than 80 points.

"I’m really expecting this kind of game against GlobalPort because they’re playing really well," head coach Leo Austria said.

"Besides, isa dun sa super five namin, si Alex Cabagnot, did not play due to foot injury. I hope he can recover at the soonest possible time because the team that we’re going to play in the next few games are really wanting to win because of their standing," he added.

Fajardo, the league's reigning four-time MVP, feasted on offense, scoring a season-high 34 points to go along with 13 rebounds.

San Miguel's other MVP, Arwind Santos, had 17 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists while Marcio Lassiter fired 17 as well.

Huruela, filling in for the injured Alex Cabagnot likewise made a good account for himself, finishing with 17 markers, 12 in the second half. He also had five assists and six steals.

For Global, who now drops to 2-3, Stanley Pringle came away with 23 points but he also shot 24 times from the field.

Kelly Nabong and Sean Anthony dropped 15 apiece for the Batang Pier.
