From statistician to Commissioner, Marcial's time is now
Seriously, for the longest time, Willie Marcial has been immersed in the PBA day in, day out. He's in there during the league's most trying times and he's also there when the league is at the highest of highs.

The PBA's new Commissioner is someone that has been in the league for the longest time.

Seriously, for the longest time, Willie Marcial has been immersed in the PBA day in, day out. He's in there during the league's most trying times and he's also there when the league is at the highest of highs.

On Thursday, the 56-year-old Marcial became the PBA's 10th Commissioner. Following the resignation of Chito Narvasa, Marcial took over as OIC to start 2018, term that was set to expire on Jan. 31.

However, in a unanimous vote, the PBA Board decided to elevate Marcial to become Commissioner full time, marking a new era for the league.

For the fans, and literally everyone who has been familiar with the PBA, Marcial is not a new name and face because he's been around.

Marcial is the league's long-time PBA Media Bureau Chief. However, he was first part of the PBA statistics team during the time of Commissioner Leo Prieto before moving on to become a TV floor director for Vintage Enterprises.

After that, Marcial was co-head statistician and became Media Bureau Chief in 2003, a job he will continue to do despite being given a three-year term as Commissioner.

When Commissioner Noli Eala took over, Boss Willie became part of the Commissioner's Office, serving under Eala and succeeding Commissioners in Sonny Barios, Chito Salud, and Narvasa.

Now, it's his time and everyone has taken the promotion with a positive note.

"It is important that we have somebody there who understands, who grew up in the PBA, who understands the PBA," league chairman Ricky Vargas said.

"[Willie] hsa been mentored by many of the PBA Commissioners in the past. He's probably the one who has learned [most] over the years in the PBA, learning with various types of Commissioners. He has learned so much what that entails," he added.
