Fuel Masters hold off Ginebra's furious rally
With 56 seconds to hold on, the Fuel Masters nearly botched the ending, committing turnover after turnover and allowing the barangay to make it to within three points after a booming trey from Kevin Ferrer with 2.8 seconds to go.

Phoenix needed all of its 24-point lead in order to survive Brgy. Ginebra.

The Fuel Masters withstood a furious rally by the Gin Kings Friday, picking up an 87-82 victory in the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

With Ginebra threatening to steal the game, cutting the deficit to seven, 76-83, Jeff Chan drilled a mid-range J inside the final minute to restore some sort of order for Phoenix.

With 56 seconds to hold on, the Fuel Masters nearly botched the ending, committing turnover after turnover and allowing the barangay to make it to within three points after a booming trey from Kevin Ferrer with 2.8 seconds to go.

Finally, two free throws from Jeff Chan mercifully ended the game and Phoenix improved to 3-3 in the standings.

"Latter part we were cautious eh," head coach Louie Alas said.

"Yun yung mahirap sa team na dine-develop mo pa yung winning habit. But we're getting there," he added.

The Fuel Masters made their run in the second period, holding Ginebra scoreless for five minutes all while scoring 23 straight points to take a 51-29 lead early into the second half.

Phoenix led by as many as 24, 75-31, late in the third but the Gin Kings woke up in the fourth behind Scottie Thompson and Japeth Aguilar to make things interesting.

Still, Phoenix's advantage was more than enough to hold on despite scoring only 12 points in the last 12 minutes.

Jeff Chan, Willy Wilson, and Matthew Wright all scored 19 points each to lead the Fuel Masters on offense.

Chan and Wright also combined for 11 rebounds and 10 assists while Wilson was a perfect 7-of-7 from the field.

Rookie Jason Perkins added 12 points.

For Ginebra, it was the fourth straight game where they trailed double digits and the third straight game where they failed to overcome such deficit.

The Gin Kings are now 2-3 heading into a Philippine Cup Finals rematch against three-time defending champion San Miguel in two days.

Thompson led the way for the barangay with 22 points, 12 in the fourth, on top of 13 rebounds. Japeth added 21 points and nine boards.
