Maraming gustong sumali. 'Pag dumami ‘yan, parang magiging NBA style. May East and West, sa atin naman, South and North -- MPBL founder Senator Manny Pacquiao
Senator Manny Pacquiao sees the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League expanding moving forward.
The league attracted 10 teams in its inaugural season but the 8-division boxing champion has high hopes of seeing more squads joining the league.
“Maraming gustong sumali,” said the MPBL founder Thursday during the tournaments season-opener at the Big Dome. “Pag dumami ‘yan, parang magiging NBA style. May East and West, sa atin naman, South and North.”
“Kung sino yung gustong sumali sa next conference, maganda itong league na ito dahil sa mga lugar,” he added.
The new local basketball league, a brainchild of Pacquiao, has been in the pipeline for almost year.
Aside from delivering a new basketball tournament with local flavor, Pacquiao views the tournament as a chance to discover new talents and help local government units promote their cities and provinces.
“Matagal ko ginawa ito. Mahigit isang taon ‘yung formula na ginawa natin para mapaganda at ma-involve ‘yung mga mamamayan sa liga na ito,” he said. “’Yun ang naisip ko, to involve the local governments. Makakatulong ito sa provinces at cities.”
“Para s’yang NBA style. Sa atin naman, mga city and province,” he added. “Ang game naman is home-and-away.”
Pacquiao also thanked broadcast partner, ABS-CBN S+A, for delivering the action live at primetime.
“Nagpapasalamat ako na ka-partner natin, kasama natin ang ABS-CBN (S+A) at napapanood ito ng buong sambayanang Pilipino saan mang sulok ng Pilipinas,” he said.
