Alvin Pasaol on ‘Manong’ Derrick: ‘Na-miss ko yung daddy ko’
For the very first time, Alvin Pasaol and Derrick Pumaren were on opposing sides

Without a doubt, Alvin Pasaol and Derrick Pumaren made University of the East fun to watch last year.

With Pasaol’s scoring sprees and Pumaren’s swag, the Red Warriors were the feel-good squad of the season even with a 3-11 record.

Now in the 2018 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup, however, the two have gone their separate ways with Pasaol playing for Marinerong Pilipino and Pumaren joining Centro Escolar University.

And when they faced off on Monday, the mentor and his team got the better of his mentee and his team.

The Scorpions, for whom Pumaren now serves as general manager for basketball operations, downed the Skippers, for whom Pasaol now plays.

It was the first time the two have faced off against each other.

And it was also the first time in over a month the two have seen each other.

Of course, Pasaol said it was good seeing his former mentor whom he considers as a father figure – even if they were on opposing sides.

Asked if he missed Pumaren, he answered, “Siyempre, si daddy ko yun e. Na-miss ko yung daddy ko.”

The same goes for Pumaren who said he remains nothing but proud of his unearthed gem from Davao. “Of course, proud ako. Siyempre naman,” he said.

He was quick to add, however, “Pero I’m on the other side na e. Nothing personal.”

Indeed, Pumaren was only ready to rib Pasaol as the former’s team was getting the better of the latter’s. “We were joking around (post-game) nga na papadaanan na sana kita ng popcorn dun e,” he shared.

Asked about it, Pasaol answered with a hearty laugh, “Sabi nga ni manong, ‘Ano? Ang init ng pwet mo?’ Pero nagbibiro lang din yun, siyempre.”

Pasaol only saw action for three minutes in Marinerong Pilipino’s loss.

After the game, however, as he had his arms around the shoulders of his father figure, he was all smiles.

Without a doubt, that Pumaren-Pasaol bond that made UE so fun to watch will never be broken.
