The Kraken stands at 6'10". But Kai? The young buck is already at 7'1" and is still growing.
It's very rare for June Mar Fajardo to be the smaller person when taking a photo with someone else.
Well that was the case Monday because the reigning four-time PBA Most Valuable Player was taking snapshots with high school phenom Kai Sotto of Ateneo.
You see, the Kraken stands at 6'10". But Kai? The young buck is already at 7'1" and is still growing.
"Na-amaze ako. Nakita ko na siya dati," Fajardo said of Sotto.
"Dati halos konti lang lamang niya eh, ngayon sobra na," he added talking about their respective heights.
While the two already met before, Monday was the first time Fajardo saw Sotto in action as the Ateneo high school star attended his first Gilas Pilipinas practice at the Meralco Gym.
Sotto, with his combination of height, age, and potential, is seen as the future of Philippine basketball and Fajardo, the current star of the sport, couldn't agree more.
"Grabe yung potential niya, sobrang bright ng future niya," Fajardo said.
For the Kraken, it's simply a matter of Kai doing the right things to fulfill his potential.
"Kailangan lang niya mag-practice ng mabuti. Kailangan ng disiplina sa sarili at kailangan niya magpalakas ng katawan din. Big man siya eh so banggaan yun," Fajardo said.
"Pero so far naman, maganda naman. Grabe, kita niyo yung paano siya dumakdak? Talagang baon talaga yung bola sa dunk niya. Future siya ng Gilas at ng PBA," June Mar added.
At 15 years old, Kai still has a long way to go, as early as now, he has caught the attention of the best player in the Philippines today.
"Oo, malalampasan walang duda yun," Fajardo said when asked if Sotto can one day surpass his already-impressive resume.
"Ang tangkad niya, 6'10" ako nasa 7'1" na ata siya. Nag-usap nga kami ni Japeth [Aguilar] ngayon pag-pasok ni Kai wala na dadakdakan na kami nun eh," he added.
