Valenzuela silences Caloocan at own turf
Valenzuela completed a comeback win over home team Caloocan in a wild finish.

Paolo Hubalde sank a pressure-packed game-winning split from the charity line with five seconds left as Valenzuela escaped with a heart-stopping 79-78 win over Caloocan in front of the shocked home crowd inside the Caloocan Sports Complex late Thursday in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Anta Rajah Cup.

With just 12 ticks left following the heavily contested layup of Supremos guard Mar Villahermosa that knotted the game at 78, Caloocan player Don Ochea made a crucial blunder at the backcourt when he fouled Hubalde after receiving the inbound pass.

Hubalde with the partisan crowd jeering bricked his first attempt before calmly sinking the next foul shot to put the Classic back on top.

With Caloocan exhausting all of its timeout, Villahermosa was forced to throw a long prayer that just bounced off the board as Valenzuela walked away with the victory that erased its painful 65-73 loss to Batangas last Saturday.

Hubalde and Adrian Celada finished with 15 points each while Mark Andaya scored 11 for the Classic, who handed the Supremos their second loss in as many games.

Villahermosa and James Mangahas posted 11 points each for Caloocan.

Meanwhile, Muntinlupa barged in the win column after a scorching fourth quarter showing to silence the Paranaque Patriots, 67-60, to tie its victim at 1-1 record.

The Cagers limited the Patriots to only six points in eight and a half minutes in the payoff period to turn a 42-46 deficit at the end of the third into a 61-52 lead with 1:33 left.

Pari Llagas and Dave Moraled led Muntinliupa with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Allan Mangahas chipped in with 15.
