San Beda defends PCCL crown vs Ateneo, DLSU, five others
The PCCL makes its return after a two-year hiatus
After getting extra time for preparation, San Beda College is all set to defend its crown in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League.
The NCAA titlists will be pitted against rival Lyceum of the Philippines University, UAAP king Ateneo de Manila University and runner-up De La Salle University, and CESAFI champion University of Visayas in the revived tournament tipping off on Thursday at Pasig’s Ynares Sports Arena.
Southern Luzon’s top team Naga College Foundation, Mindanao leader Holy Trinity College, and NCR qualifier San Sebastian College-Recoletos will also be there to take a stand.
The PCCL was last held in late 2015 before taking a two-year hiatus.
Then, the Red Lions won it all. Due to unforeseen circumstances, however, they shared the crown with a “co-champion” in Far Eastern University.
Now, the league is back and better than ever as it refocuses on its vision. “The PCCL wants to provide recognition to school teams in the provinces and to give opportunities for local talents to be exposed on the national stage,” chairman Rey Gamboa said.
The tournament’s Elite Eight has been divided into Group A (Ateneo, LPU, NCF, and UV) and Group B (DLSU, Holy Trinity, San Beda, San Sebastian). The two groups will duke it out in crossover contests.
The top four teams from there will move on to the one-game semifinals and then the one-game championship round.
A matchup between DLSU and Holy Trinity kicks off the 2018 PCCL Elite Eight at 1:00 PM which will be followed by a showdown between San Beda and Baste at 3:00 PM and then a clash between Ateneo and NCF at 5:00 PM.
