"World class" Gilas Pilipinas takes its shot at talented Boomers

"Everybody in this [team] know we're world class now just like Australia is. So we're gonna go out and play as hard as we can," --- Gilas team captain Gabe Norwood.

While Australia is naturally the overwhelming favorite in its highly-anticipated clash with the Philippines in the first round of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, don't make the foolish mistake that Gilas Pilipinas has no business being in the same floor with the ultra-talented Boomers.

Just don't.

The Philippines is world class when it comes to basketball and Gilas is out to prove it again Thursday in Melbourne against Australia.

"I think we crosed that threshold when we qualified and played in the World Cup," team captain Gabe Norwood said.

"Everybody in this [team] know we're world class now just like Australia is. So we're gonna go out and play as hard as we can," he added.

While its good to be confident on the side of Gilas, the national team is fully aware of the many advantages of the Boomers ahead of their Group B match.

However, Gilas Pilipinas is also aware of just how they can score an monumental upset.

"Australia, they're a pretty huge team from the 5 all the way down to the 1," Andray Blatche said.

"Just like I said before, our speed and our outside shooting are our advantages. If we hit our shots, we put ourselves in the position to win," he added.

Australia should be the best team the Philippines has to face since the 2014 World Cup and the national team is up for the challenge.

Nothing that good old "Puso" can't handle at the end of the day.

"Sobrang hirap, sobrang pressure sa amin," Calvin Abueva said.

"Malalaki ang kalaban, nag-champion sila sa FIBA Asia. [Pero] gagawin namin lahat ng dapat naming gawin sa laro na to," he added.
