Batangas City turned to Val Acuna and Teytey Teodoro to preserve its perfect record.
Val Acuna and Teytey Teodoro connived in overtime to spark Batangas City’s 87-79 escape over upset-conscious Paranaque Patriots to keep a firm hold of the solo lead late Thursday in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Anta Rajah Cup at their home turf Batangas City Coliseum.
The Athletics kept their pristine record intact after five outings all thanks to Acuna and Teodoro’s timely baskets in a 12-2 scoring blitz that broke a 75-75 deadlock early in the extension.
Acuna unloaded 19 points, Kier Quinto and Lester Alvarez had 17 markers while Teodoro scored five of his eight points in Batangas’ telling overtime barrage.
Alavarez nailed a three-pointer with 67 seconds left in regulation that put the Athletics up, 73-71, with 1:07 left. Patriots forward Daniel De Guzman answered with a basket on the other end that tied the game at 73 as the match went into an extra five minutes of action.
Gab Dagangon scored 21 points while De Guzman and Juneric Baloria finished with 15 and 10 markers, respectively, for Paranaque, which dropped to 2-3 slate tied with Bulacan.
Meanwhile, Navotas defeated Valenzuela, 82-77, to tie its victim at 3-2 card.
JP Calvo led the Clutch with 17 points while Yves Sazon had 16 points.
Paolo Hubalde had 18 points, six rebounds and five assists in a lost cause for the Classic. Mon Mabayo registered a double-double with 18 markers and 10 boards.
