Calvin Abueva proved his spot in Gilas with an energetic outing vs. Japan.
MANILA, Philippines --- Calvin Abueva wasn't even supposed to play for Gilas this month.
He was taken off the pool for the second window by head coach Chot Reyes for missing three straight Gilas practices.
However, after overcoming some personal problems, the Beast 2.0 worked his way back to the active lineup of the Philippine national team, serving as a spark in the game against Australia despite taking a loss.
But with Japan coming to town Sunday, Abueva proved his worth to Gilas, helping the Philippines take a crucial win by being a source of energy for the national team.
"Lumaban talaga kami," Abueva said after giving Gilas eight points and an endless supply of angst in almost 11 minutes on the court.
While Gilas is through to the next round, Abueva says that the national team is still looking forward to the third window of the first round.
Gilas will have a pair of rematches against Taipei and Australia in a couple of months.
However, after the wild sequence of events that led to Sunday, Abueva is just happy to play for Gilas still.
"Masarap na makabalik ulit dito. Pagka-balk ko, binigay ko naman ang best ko," he said.
