Gin Kings repeats over ROS to take 1-0 lead in quarters
The barangay is now one step closer to a return trip to the semis after zooming to a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series.

Brgy. Ginebra didn't need three extra sessions to beat Rain or Shine this time around.

The Gin Kings stopped the Elasto Painters for the second time in four days, taking an 88-80 win Monday at the MOA Arena to start the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals.

The barangay is now one step closer to a return trip to the semis after zooming to a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series.

While it didn't need three overtimes, this game between Ginebra and ROS was similar to their first one just last Friday in terms of it being a grind out contest. And just like last Friday, the Gin Kings emerged victorious.

"I thought the guys did a good job of grinding, making it into a defensive type of game and taking care of possessions," head coach Tim Cone said.

"This is a tough team because of Beau and Chris and Gabe. They're such veterans, they've been through wars and they know the game so well. It's so hard to fool them you have to go out there and do your thing because they're too smart," he added.

After a close three quarters, the Gin Kings broke the game open in the fourth, leading by as many as 13 points, 82-69.

Ginebra needed every bit of that cushion as the Elasto Painters made a late rally to keep things interesting in the end.

LA Tenorio led five Gin Kings in double figures with 17 points while Joe Devance finished with 15, nine in the fourth quarter alone. Japeth Aguilar added 14 while Scottie Thompson was also good for 14 on top of 16 rebounds and seven assists.

For ROS, Beau Belga dropped 17 points while guard Ed Daquioag scored 16. Game 2 will be on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
