Batangas bounced back mightily from a setback as it submitted Quezon City while Navotas silenced home team Caloocan Thursday in the MPBL Anta Rajah Cup.
Batangas banked on its fourth quarter scoring blitz to turn back Quezon City, 77-68, as the Athletics returned in the win column of the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Anta Rajah Cup at the Caloocan Sports Complex Thursday night.
Trailing by one heading into the payoff period, the Athletics sparked a 10-3 scoring run capped by Teytey Teodoro’s triple for a 66-60 cushion.
The Capitals cut their deficit to 68-64 with just 4:21 left in the game but Batangas doused cold water on QC’s comeback attempt with six unanswered points to pull away by 10 with just 1:46 left in game.
Quezon City never came closer than six as Batangas won its seventh game in eight outings.
Teodoro showed the way for the Athletics, who rebounded from their first loss in the tournament, 72-80, at the hands of Bulacan last week, with 15 points with the bulk of his productions coming from four triples.
Kier Quinto added 14 markers, Jhaymo Eguilos finished with a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds while Paul Varilla and Lester Alvarez got 11 markers each for Batangas.
The Capitals dropped to 5-3 win-loss slate with their third defeat in four games.
Jay Collado paced QC with 22 points while Andrew Estrella had 10 markers.
Meanwhile, Navotas silenced the home crowd with an emphatic 66-56 win over neighbor Caloocan in the nightcap.
The Clutch opened the fourth quarter with seven straight points to turn a 43-44 deficit into a 50-44 lead with eight minutes left in the ball game.
Jopher Custodio’s trey brought the Supremos within five, 58-53, with 3:31 remaining but Navotas held Caloocan scoreless for three minutes while building a 66-53 lead before James Mangahas drilled a triple that came a little too late with only 22 seconds left.
JP Calvo dropped 22 points and grabbed 11 boards with three assists as the Clutch evened their record to 4-4. Rey Publico had 10 markers and eight rebounds while Gino Jumao-as finished with nine points.
Marlon Basco scored 18 points while Cedrick Labing-isa posted 13 markers in a lost cause for Caloocan, which absorbed its seventh loss in eight outings to remain at the cellar.
