Beermen handily beat Ginebra to take early series lead
San Miguel took an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series with the win.

In a rare occurrence, June Mar Fajardo played a pedestrian game despite having meaningful minutes.

And yet, San Miguel still won convincingly.

The three-time defending champion Beermen smashed Brgy. Ginebra, 102-90, Friday at the Big Dome, kicking off the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup semifinals in strong fashion.

San Miguel took an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series with the win.

"I think in a series, it's very important to win your first game," head coach Leo Austria said.

"But we cannot rest on our laurels. Because we know Ginebra is playing well before this game, it might be na pagod lang siguro sila dahil this is their fourth game in 8 days," he added.

The Beermen sure pounded on the weary Gin Kings, leading by as many as 19 points, 64-45, in the second half.

Arwind Santos led the way for the champs, scoring 23 points and 8 rebounds while Von Pessumal came off the bench to drop a career-high 18 points.

Fajardo only had nine points in 30 minutes for the Beermen.

For the Gin Kings, Sol Mercado, Scottie Thompson, and Japeth Aguilar all scored 17 points but it wasn't enough for the win.

Game 2 wil be on Sunday still at the Big Dome.
