Red-hot Marinerong Pilipino cruised to its fifth straight victory at the expense of Jose Rizal University, 84-62, in the 2018 PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup at the JCSGO Gym in Cubao.
Alvin Pasaol set the tone for the Skippers, dropping all of his nine points in the first half.
Abu Tratter meanwhile led Marinerong Pilipino with 16 markers and six rebounds, while Gab Banal added 11 points, five assists, and four boards.
Renzo Subido also scored 11, including 3-of-5 shooting from downtown.
Marinerong Pilipino’s win makes them tied with Akari-Adamson with identical 6-2 records.
“We haven’t achieved anything yet,” he said. “We want to be in the top two, to be in the semis outright. But the important thing here is we need to take care of ourselves and not relax. We want to be better every game," Marinero coach Koy Banal said after the game.
Ervin Grospe led the skidding JRU with 16 points and three rebounds.
The Heavy Bombers have now lost seven consecutive games to once again drop down the cellar at 1-7.
In the first game, Wangs Basketball-Letran held off a late Go for Gold run to escape with a victory, 91-88.
Bong Quinto poured eight of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, including the insurance free throws with 8.2 ticks left.
The forward guided Wangs-Letran to a 15-point lead, 79-64, with 6:04 remaining in the game, before Go for Gold made a 16-4 run to trim the lead down to one, 88-89, with 11.4 seconds left.
“Ang dami naming tinapon na crucial possessions. Luckily, nag-prevail pa rin yung defense namin sa dulo,” said Wangs-Letran coach Jeff Napa.
The Scratchers had one last chance to force overtime, but Justin Gutang missed a three at the buzzer as the Couriers came away with the victory.
Rey Publico chipped in 14 markers, nine boards, and three blocks, while Bonbon Batiller got 12 for Wangs-Letran who extended their win streak to three and rose to a 5-2 record.
Yankie Haruna meanwhile tallied 20 points and seven rebounds for Go for Gold, while Paul Desiderio had 15 markers in his debut.
The Scratchers dropped to a 4-5 record.
