Dave Ildefonso rescued Team Punks from the jaws of defeat
All the doors and all the windows were closed on Dave Ildefonso as he and his team trailed by three with under 18 seconds to go in the 2018 SLAM Rising Stars.
Still, the freshly-crowned UAAP champion did his best – even with Ateneo de Manila High School teammate Jason Credo all over him.
Turns out, Ildefonso’s best was good enough as that gutsy triple boosted Team Punks to a 124-113 overtime victory versus Team Hype on Sunday at the Gatorade Hoops Center in Mandaluyong.
The two teams were tied at 101 with 24 ticks to go in regulation before L-Jay Gonzales set up John Galinato for a corner three that put up Team Hype by three.
Off a timeout, Ildefonso was shut down at every turn and was forced to hoist a difficult shot over the long, outstretched arms of Credo.
Miraculously, the shot found the bottom of the net and the versatile wing celebrated sending the game into overtime.
There, Kai Sotto and Evan Nelle took charge as Team Punks pulled away for good.
Ildefonso wound up with 15 points as well as the highlight of all highlights.
Sotto posted a 16-point, 13-rebound double-double while Nelle scored a team-high 21 markers to be recognized as co-MVPs.
Galinato led the losing effort for Team Hype with 27 points while Gonzales collected 14 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.
