Scrappy Magnolia takes its shot at mighty Beermen
In 2018, the re-christened Magnolia Hotshots get ready to challenge the Beermen again, this time for the Philippine Cup championship.

Last March 20, the Purefoods franchise celebrated 30 years in the PBA. In 1988, the franchise ended up losing its first game to San Miguel Beer.

Also 30 years ago, Purefoods missed out on its first title after taking a seven-game Finals loss to San Miguel in the 1988 Open Conference.

In 2018, the re-christened Magnolia Hotshots get ready to challenge the Beermen again, this time for the Philippine Cup championship.

The best-of-7 titular showdown starts Friday with Game 1 and the Hotshots are raring to end San Miguel's three-year reign as All-Filipino champions.

Taking care of NLEX in a tough semis series, Chito Victolero's crew are installed as underdogs against the mighty Beermen.

However, one should never forget that both teams actually ended up with the same record in the elimination round and the only reason San Miguel was number one is because the Beermen beat the Hotshots by one point in their first meeting this season.

Magnolia led that game almost all throughout before the Beermen scored a sensational comeback win.

Speaking of the Beermen, the champs are chasing history anew.

After completing a rare three-peat last season, San Miguel is looking to become the first team to win the All-Filipino title in four straight years.

Game 1 will tip off at 7:00 p.m. Friday live from the Big Dome.
