Hindi ko maibigay ang buong pwersa ko kasi baka mamaya tawagan ako ng foul -- Magnolia big man Ian Sangalang on defending San Miguel Beer behemoth June Mar Fajardo
San Miguel Beer center June Mar Fajardo went on a rampage in the extra 10 minutes, bullying his way around Magnolia big man Ian Sangalang as the Beermen annexed their fourth straight PBA Philippine Cup title Friday in a 108-99 double overtime win in Game 5 of the best-of-seven Finals series at the MOA Arena.
Sangalang admitted that he was helpless against Finals Most Valuable Player Fajardo, who muscled his way to a monster double-double of 42 points and 20 rebounds, in OT after drawing his fifth foul with five minutes left in the fourth quarter.
“Sobrang hirap kasi alam mo ‘yung five fouls ka na so hindi ka na pwedeng dumiin eh,” said Sangalang, who scored all of his 11 points in regulation.
Fajardo manhandled Sangalang in the extension as he scored 12 points, eight in the second OT.
“Kasi alam mong konting ano lang pag natawagan ka ng foul ga-graduate ka na,” said Sangalang, whose squad was in control 71-48 in the third before their monumental collapse. “Kumbaga nilaro ko lang kung hanggang saan ang kaya ko na five fouls ako. Hindi ko maibigay ang buong pwersa ko kasi baka mamaya tawagan ako ng foul. Ayun sinubok ko lang pero mahirap talaga.”
Sangalang, who posted 29 points in the Hotshots’ Game 1 win, committed 8 eight of Magnolia’s 26 turnovers including a bad pass that led to a steal by SMB guard Marcio Lassiter with three seconds left in regulation.
Sangalang also lost the handle in the first OT with 34 seconds left and the game tied at 94 after Fajardo scored a basket over his defense.
The Pampanga-native turned the ball over three more times in the second extension including a sorry lost handle with 42 seconds left and Magnolia trailing, 105-99.
“Hindi ko masabi kasi ‘yung mga crucial na ‘yun kailangan namin pero natu-turnover kami,” he said. “Parang small things lang ‘yun na malapit na makukuha na namin pero natatapon pa eh.”
“Siguro breaks of the game rin yun na di namin nakuha at nakukuha nila,” he added. “Credit talaga sa kanila (Beermen) ang championship experience nila.”
