Alab Pilipinas is back in the ABL semifinals - now with the first two playoff wins in franchise history under their belts
HO CHI MINH, VIETNAM – Alab Pilipinas has come out on top in two highly physical matchups against Saigon.
And so, they are back in the semifinals now in the 2017-2018 Asean Basketball League.
While it definitely didn’t come easy, the Filipinos said they had no doubts that this is what would happen. “Saigon, they are a great team, but this is what we expected,” Lo Domingo told reporters after they finished off a quarterfinals sweep of Saigon last Saturday at the CIS Arena.
Domingo then went on to say how the Philippines has overcome all the obstacles, including a 0-3 start to the season, to find itself with a great shot at the championship. “We feel like we’ve really worked hard all year. We feel like we’ve come such a long way from the beginning of the year,” he shared.
He then continued, “We started at the bottom and climbed all the way to the top. Now, all we want is to bring (the championship) back home to the Philippines.”
Domingo and company began their campaign with two losses to Hong Kong and one loss to Singapore. Since then, they have won 14 of their last 17 games – including a stretch where they won eight in a row.
The road doesn’t get any easier, however, as Alab now enters a best-of-three series up against the same Hong Kong which had swept them in the elimination round.
Still, they have no doubt that they belong here. As Domingo put it, “We feel we deserve a chance at the title and we feel like we deserve a chance at Hong Kong, the defending champions.”
That is exactly why the Filipinos remain focused on the ultimate prize. “We have an end goal – and that’s the championship,” Domingo said.
