SBP says, for now, Kobe Paras will be based in Philippines
Kobe Paras is committed to Gilas Pilipinas - whether it be 5-on-5 or 3x3
Kobe Paras is on his way back home to the Philippines.
The 20-year-old basketball prodigy will land in Manila on Monday afternoon and is likely to join the Gilas cadets practice later in the day.
This confirms the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas’ earlier statement that Paras is “committed to (the Gilas) program.”
As SBP deputy director Butch Antonio put it last Wednesday, “He’s committed to our program and we’ll see how we can progress from (here) cause it looks like Kobe’s here to stay.”
A day after, Antonio reiterated his comments by saying, “He’s coming home. I think he’s done with his obligations in the US so good for us. As far as we’re concerned, Kobe will be basing himself in the Philippines in the meantime.”
That means that the 6-foot-6 talent will be available for the Philippine national team in the tournaments it will be participating in – whether that be with the Gilas cadets in the Filoil Preseason in April to May or Gilas itself in the FIBA Asian Cup Qualifiers in the second half of the year
And that goes not only for full-court five-on-five as well. “Whenever he becomes available, he’s committed to the Gilas program – 5-on-5, 3x3,” the SBP deputy director said.
For that, SBP is nothing but pleased. “I’m very thankful and glad that Kobe is very committed to the Gilas program. He’s very important,” Antonio said.
