Desiderio, Javi GDL propel UP to fourth win in a row
Paul Desiderio and Javi GDL made sure UP did not skip a beat even without Juan GDL and Bright Akhuetie

Even without Juan Gomez de Liano and Bright Akhuetie, the University of the Philippines kept rolling in the 2018 Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup.

Javi GDL stepped up big-time while Paul Desiderio held down the fort in the endgame as the Fighting Maroons made quick work of Emilio Aguinaldo College, 83-70, on Monday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The older GDL made an impact for each and every second he was on the floor and totaled 21 points in 8-of-10 shooting while Desiderio had all the answers for State U in the final frame en route to a 16-point, eight-rebound, and four-assist performance.

Behind those two, UP overcame the absences of Juan GDL who was out with an ankle sprain and Akhuetie who was suited up but did not play.

Will Gozum and Jun Manzo also added 12 points each as the Fighting Maroons went on an all-out attack for their fourth consecutive victory coming from a 0-3 start to the tournament.

JP Maguliano posted a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Generals who remain winless in five games.

In the day’s other games, University of the East put the first blemish on the formerly spotless slate of Mapua University with a 92-84 decision while Adamson University flew higher than Jose Rizal University for a 74-67 win.
