“I added yung mga spice na, hindi sila ganun ka-sikat pero I think they’re capable of surprising the league, and yung kinukuha ko kasi yung hard worker tsaka yung good attitude sa player.” - Batangas Athletics head coach Mac Tan on new additions
As a brand new conference of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League draws closer, first-ever champions Batangas-Tanduay Athletics gear up for a bigger and more competitive playing field.
And in preparation for the upcoming 2018 MPBL Datu Cup, the reigning Anta Rajah Cup titleholders have beefed up their championship core by adding a few 'spices' to the team, as head coach Mac Tan says.
“I added ex-[PBA player] Bong Galanza, some of our former players from the D-League, which is Sandy Ceñal and Lucas Tagarda, who will be in my rotation,” Tan announced during the Batangas-Tanduay Athletics Press Lunch, Monday morning.
The 25-year old Galanza, a former University of the East Red Warriors standout, previously played for the Kia/Mahindra/Columbian franchise in the PBA.
Ceñal and Tagarda on the other hand, are PBA D-League veterans with the Tanduay Light Rhum Masters.
Coach Tan also revealed another key addition in former Centro Escolar University star guard Jason Opiso.
“I-rereveal ko na, meron akong nakuha from CEU, Jason Opiso, will be a valued addition sa team.”
The addition of the four players will help soften the blow of losing Bong Quinto and Jhaymo Eguilos for an extended period. Quinto will be suiting up for the Letran Knights in the upcoming NCAA Season 94, while Eguilos is recovering from minor injuries.
With the MPBL expanding from ten teams to a whopping 26, the upcoming Datu Cup will obviously be a much longer tournament, something that Tan took into consideration when he added more parts to his already-championship caliber roster.
“Well siguro i’ll take it one game at a time. Yung pag-alaga sa player, yun ang pinaka-importante sa akin, is to keep the team healthy in the playoffs, kasi it’s a gruelling season, 25 games elimination pa lang yun, talagang as much as possible, I’ll use all my players, kaya nga kumuha kami hindi lang yung basta-basta lang makumpleto yung roster.”
“Kumuha ako ng players talaga na magagamit ko, at least sa mga games na kakailanganin, kasi nga to keep the team healthy, yun ang first priority ko, to keep the team healthy.” Tan added.
With regards to his new players, Tan spoke highly of their work ethic, saying that while they aren’t necessarily as popular, they definitely have the ability to perform well.
“I added yung mga spice na, hindi sila ganun ka-sikat pero I think they’re capable of surprising the league, and yung kinukuha ko kasi yung hard worker tsaka yung good attitude sa player.”
“I’d rather have hard working guys rather than talent. Iba yung good attitude eh, kung talented nga, ayaw naman mag-practice, mahirap din.” Tan continued.
The 2018 MPBL Datu Cup opens on June 12th at the Araneta Coliseum.
