BOCAUE, Bulacan --- As the 20th seed, Perlas Pilipinas was the heavy underdog against no. 4 Netherlands as the 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup kicked off Friday at the Philippine Arena here.

Despite that, the Filipinas showed a gritty fight, even taking the lead early in the game and mounting a late rally that just fell short.

Ultimately, Perlas dropped its first game in Pool D, an 11-21 decision to the Dutch.

"The effort was there," head coach Pat Aquino said.

"Again, first time jitters for everybody. Having a tournament this big, the girls sometimes get jittery and di nila nagagawa yung kailangan nila gawin," he added.

It's understandable for Perlas to get nervous at a world tournament like this one.

After all, Jack Animam, Afril Bernardino, Gemma Miranda, and Janine Pontejos are the first Pinay players to ever compete at this level.

They literally have no experience here and they'll need this experience in order to get better for the next one.

"Positive was we were head-to-head with them," Aquino said.

"But they're more experienced. And that's one thing that we lack. That's why I always say na exposure is the best going into this kind of level," he added.
