3x3WC: PH takes heartbreaking loss at the hands of Germany
Perlas Pilipinas lost a narrow 10-12 decision to Germany in the 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup.

BOCAUE, Bulacan --- Janine Pontejos could have stolen the show again.

The Perlas shooter missed three good attempts to tie, including one in the final seconds, as Germany managed to hold on for a close 12-10 win over the Philippines in Pool D of the 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup Friday at the Philippine Arena here.

Down two in the final minute, Pontejos missed back-to-back wide open shots from deep that could have tied things up.

Still, Perlas had several other chances but Bernardino missed a two-point attempt from the corner and Pontejos missed another last-second shot from rainbow country that allowed the Germans to escape with the victory.

"Even though we lost, I felt like we could be in that level," head coach Pat Aquino said.

"We could compete with other countries. Sayang lang, minalas lang ng konti. But I'm so proud of these girls, they played their hearts out today," he added.

Perlas certainly gave Germany everything as the national team tried to steal a game in the ultra-competitive Pool D.

Afril Bernardino in particular was sensational. The former NU star scored six points for the Philippines, mostly on drives that the Germans failed to block.

Regardless of her huge fight, Germany had an answer to everything and the Germans even had luck on their side as Perlas missed those four good attempts from deep in the chaotic final minute.

Laura Zdravevska and Wiebke Bruns scored four apiece for Germany.

As it stands, the Philippines is dead last in Pool D after Day 1 with a 0-2 mark. Spain is in first place at 2-0 while Hungary, Germany, and the Netherlands are tied at 1-1.

Perlas will resume group play on Sunday.

In other Day 1 results, no. 1 China somehow managed to top Pool B after a pair of dramatic games.

Against France, the Chinese took a narrow 16-14 win before needing a game-winner from Li Yinyung to escape Switzerland, 21-20. China is 2-0 in its group followed by the France, Switzerland, and Argentina at one win each. Kazakhstan is 0-2.

In men's play, Poland and Estonia are both 2-0 in Pool B followed by Slovenia at third with a 1-1 mark. Japan and Indonesia are yet to win after two games.

Latvia and Croatia also took early leads in Pool D with clean 2-0 records. Ukraine is 1-1 while Jordan and Nigera are both 0-2.
