BOCAUE, Bulacan --- Perlas Pilipinas showed flashes of brilliance but in the end, superior talent won.

No. 4 The Netherlands took down the Philippines in pool play, 21-11, as the 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup started with Day 1 Friday at the Philippine Arena here.

Janine Pontejos stole the show for the Filipinas but Perlas' rally fell short, dropping their first game in Pool D.

"The effort was there. Again, first time jitters for everybody. Having a tournament this big, the girls sometimes get jittery and di nila nagagawa yung kailangan nila gawin," head coach Pat Aquino said.

"I explained everything to them earlier, hopefully we can manage," he added.

Perlas actually was on the board first as Afril Bernardino went for a strong drive to score the game's first basket, 1-0.

Pontejos then drained a booming two-pointer for an early 3-2 lead but the Netherlands started to slowly pull away.

The Philippines had one last rally left in them, cutting te deficit to three, 10-13, after another strong driving layup from Bernardino but the Netherlands responded with back-to-back two-pointers, effectively putting the game out of reach.

Pontejos led Perlas with six points including two from beyond the arc while Bernardino had four points.

For the Netherlands, it was a well-balanced attack as Karin Kujit dropped eight points, all from beyond the arc, followed by Loyce Bettonvil with six. Jacobine Klerx scored four points.

The Philippine will face Germany next to wrap up Day 1.
