"Sabi nga nila, wala namang malaking nakaka-puwing di ba?. So laban lang," --- Jack Animam said.
MANILA, Philippines --- Filipinas can ball too and it's about time we take notice.
Naturally, the spotlight in the 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup will be on Gilas Pilipinas with Christian Standhardinger, Troy Rosario, RR Pogoy, and Stanley Pringle seeing action.
However, it might be foolish to discount our Perlas crew that will feature Jack Animam, Afril Bernardino, Gemma Miranda, and Janine Pontejos.
The Philippine women's team will see action in the World Cup first as they start group play Friday and they hope to show everyone, including the unaware Pinoy hoops fans, that they belong in this kind of major tournament.
"Siguro kung maka-execute kami, kahit hindi kami manalo, magawa lang namin yung dapat namin magawa, siguro stepping stone yun hanggang samin para sa team," Jack Animam said Thursday during the World Cup's official press conference.
True enough, the Philippines will be hardpressed to actually win the World Cup.
Out of 20 teams in the tournament, the Pinays are seeded 20th.
However, more than anything, Perlas is out to prove that they too deserve some attention.
"Mindset is just play as hard as we can. Compete, makipagsabayan lang. Ma-recognize lang, hindi kasi napapansin yung mga babae," head coach Pat Aquino said.
Still, while Perlas has goals in this tournament that are beyond winning, it doesn't mean that the group will just take four consecutive losses.
They want some Ws too and surprises might come.
"Sabi nga nila, wala namang malaking nakaka-puwing di ba?" Animam said.
"So laban lang," she added.
