Mapua was no match for an Ateneo side firing on all cylinders

Not even a week after setting the biggest winning margin in the history of the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup, Ateneo de Manila University had for itself another dominant in in the 2018 edition of the tournament.

Angelo Kouame posted a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double to lead a total of five Blue Eagles in double-digits as they had their way against Mapua University, 99-55, on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Kouame, a 6-foot-10 reinforcement from Cote d’ Ivoire, overpowered opponents such as Christian Bunag and Warren Bonifacio and fueled his team’s 17-9 start.

Ateneo would not look back the rest of the way as Adrian Wong, Thirdy Ravena, and Patrick Maagdenberg then took turns spearheading the attack.

Wong wound up with 11 points built on three triples; Ravena finished with 11 markers, four rebounds, and two assists; and Maagdenberg ended with 10 points and six boards in the Blue Eagles’ eighth win in eight games.

This, coming after a 64-point demolition job of Emilio Aguinaldo College last Monday.

Despite the back-to-back routs and the spotless slate, however, true to form, head coach Tab Baldwin was not satisfied just yet. “There are certainly areas to improve on. It’s the preseason so it's most important for us to see areas to improve on,” he said.

Nonetheless, Ateneo is rolling as it heads to a showdown with archrival De La Salle University on June 12 still at the same venue.

For the Cardinals, Eric Jabel and Lawrence Victoria showed the way with 12 points apiece. They fell for the fourth game in a row following a 4-0 start to the tournament.

Meanwhile, College of St. Benilde and San Beda University remained at the top half of the leaderboard in their respective groups with separate convincing victories.

The Blazers edged out stacked Colegio de San Juan de Letran in overtime, 89-88, behind the heroics of Justin Gutang who collected 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Edward Dixon also did his part with 21 points, nine rebounds, and four assists as CSB rose to a tie for first in Group B at 6-1.

The Red Lions then warded off University of Perpetual Help, 74-68, with Donald Takoua doing the heavy lifting to the tune of a 12-point, 15-rebound double-double.

Joe Presbitero and Robert Bolick chipped in 16 and 11 points, respectively, as San Beda hiked its record to 4-3 in Group A.

With their respective losses, the Knights fell to 4-3 and the Altas fell to 1-6.
