Gilas Pilipinas eventually lost to Mongolia, 17-21, after a final two-point shot from Tsenguunbayar Gotov.
BOCAUE, Bulacan --- After a sensational opening win against no. 6 Brazil in the 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup, Gilas Pilipinas had the golden opportunity to go up 2-0 vs. no. 11 Mongolia.
The Philippines was up 8-2 early but two flagrant fould robbed the team of any sustainable momentum.
Gilas Pilipinas eventually lost, 17-21, on a final two-point shot from Mongolia's Tsenguunbayar Gotov.
Ultimately, those two flagrant fouls on Troy Rosario and RR Pogoy respectively were the main keys for the demise of Gilas.
"It was big, I feel like we had them. But they play together, they're smart. Mongolia's a smart team, I just feel player for player, we matched up to them perfectly," guard Stanley Pringle said.
"Those two intentional fouls, they got the ball back and a couple of two-pointers... I let a guy get a two-pointer in, I should've let him drive. We're just... we're really mad right now," he added.
Still, Gilas has some positives to take away for its first pair of games in the World Cup.
"We played together as a team. We played hard. I think we played pretty good defense. We gave up two intentionals or whatever but I think we played good defense for the most part," Pringle said.
"Coach Ronnie prepared us very well. We executed our plays. We attacked them. And they know that any team who plays against us its going to be really tough for them. I feel like the other teams watching, they know it as well. We're gonna play hard and we're gonna put on a show everytime," he added.
The Philippines will resumre pool play on Monday.
