3x3WC: Fil-Japanese star reunites with family at World Cup

BOCAUE, Bulacan --- The 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup served as a way to make a lovely family reunion possible.

Japan's Tatsuhito Noro, FIBA's 92nd-ranked 3x3 player with 333,250 points, turns out to be half Filipino.

He was born in Tokyo to a Filipina, Alma Miwa.

And after a long, long time, Tatsuhito reunited with his mother, he also met his maternal grandmother for the first time.

Noro, competing in the 3x3 World Cup for the Japanese national team, is in the Philippines for the first time as well.

Tatsuhito had his friends pick up his family in Angeles, Pampanga so they can see him play at the Philippine Arena here. Japan beat Indonesia first, 18-11, with Noro scoring three points before losing a close one to Poland, 16-20.

"Tuwang-tuwa naman ako, sabi niya punta raw ako sa laro niya," Miwa said.

"Tapos pinasundo niya ako sa friends niya. Tuwang-tuwa ako nakita ko siya," she added.

For his part, Tatsuhito made it a point to make the Japanese team after he found out that the World Cup will be held in the Philippines.

"First time when I found out the World Cup is in the Philippines, I recalled I'm half-Filipino," Noro said via an interpreter.

"This was my biggest goal, to make it here, to be on the national team. I made the team at the last moment and I was so happy to play in front of my mother and grandmother," Noro added.

Ms. Alma suffered a mild stroke last year and has been in the Philippines since December recovering and doing therapy.

The reunion feels like it was almost destined to happen here.

"I feel so happy. I wasn't able to meet her since [the stroke]," Tatsuhito said via his interpreter.

"It was fortunate and lucky for me to be here and I feel this was destiny to have this reunion," he added.
