3x3WC: Pontejos goes supernova but Perlas takes close loss again

Pontejos went supernova against Spain but the Philippines ended up with a close 17-21 loss Sunday at the Philippine Arena.
BOCAUE, Bulacan --- Janine Pontejos rebounded from a frustrating performance the last time around but it was still not enough for Perlas Pilipinas to score a breakthrough win in the 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup.
Pontejos went supernova against Spain but the Philippines ended up with a close 17-21 loss Sunday at the Philippine Arena here.
With a 0-3 record in Pool D, Perlas Pilipinas is officially out of the World Cup, The national women's team wrap up their schedule against Hungary later in the day.
"It was better, it's another good game for us," head coach Pat Aquino said.
"I know Spain had a hard time today. I was hoping na medyo mas dikit pa, but anyway, again experience-wise kulang, kulang pa rin. But the game was close. May mga calls lang na kaunti na medyo numipis noong huli. So I'm hoping na sana maka maski one game, one win for the Philippines para masaya naman bago mag-exit," he added.
Pontejos went off against the much taller Spaniards, scoring a game-high 13 points including 10 from two-point territory.
As Spain started to pull away, cashing in from Perlas' penalty situation, it was Pontejos that kept the Philippines in striking distance. Her last trey put Perlas within three, 17-20.
However, an easy breakaway layup from Paula Palomares off an offensive rebound ended things. Spain won a third straight game and continues to lead Pool D.
Palomares led Spain with 11 points.
Spain 21 - Palomares 11, Martinez Prat 4, Cuevas Mediavilla 4, Gimeno Martinez 2
Philippines 17 - Pontejos 13, Miranda 3., Bernardino 1, Animam 0.
