3x3WC: Perlas goes winless in World Cup after tough loss to Hungary

Perlas competed hard but failed to break through in the FIBA 3x3 World Cup.
BOCAUE, Bulacan --- In the end, Perlas Pilipinas never got to break through in the 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup.
The Philippines took another tough loss, this time a final 15-18 decision against Hungary Sunday at the Philippine Arena here.
Looking to play spoiler in Hungary's bid to make the quarterfinals, Perlas controlled the game from the start as Janine Pontejos continued her personal hot streak.
However, penalty situation ultimately doomed the Philippines as Perlas Pilipinas slowly lost four-point lead.
Things got worse for Perlas as they entered double penalty situation with 10 team fouls, awarding Hungary two free throws plus possession. That's when the tournament's no. 3 seed started to turn the game around, first taking a quick three-point lead, 14-11.
Perlas desperately tried to come back but eventually ran out of time.
"I just wanna say I'm proud of the girls for the effort, the hard work for the past three days," head coach Pat Aquino said.
"Ganun talaga, it'll start something for us sana in the future," he added.
Pontejos once again led the Philippines in scoring, finishing with seven points including two two-pointers. Afril Bernardino added four points.
Bettina Bozoki and Dora Medgyessy led the Hungarians with eight points each. Both of them combined for a total of eight free throws.
Hungary needed at least 14 points and a win to advance to the next round, which they both got. They join Spain as Pool D representatives to the quarterfinals, finishing with identical 3-1 records.
The Netherlands also finished with a 3-1 record but quotients proved to be their worst enemy. Germany won one game in four tries while the Philippines went 0-4 in pool play.
In other results, no. 1 China swept Pool B with four straight wins. Joining the Chinese in the next round in the women's division in France who finished with a 3-1 record.
Switzerland (2-2), Argentina (1-3), and Kazakhstan (0-4) complete Pool B standings.
In men's play, Slovenia (3-1) and Poland (3-1) took the top-2 spots in Pool B, beating out Estonia (3-1) in quotient.
Japan finished 1-3 while Indonesia was winless in four tries.
Latvia also advanced to the quarterfinals, sweeping Pool D. Ukraine moved on as well while Croatia, Nigera, and Jordan were eliminated.
