BOCAUE, Bulacan --- Italy's dream run ends with a gold medal.
The Italians dethroned Russia in the 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup, scoring a sensational 16-12 win in the women's Final Tuesday at the Philippine Arena here.
Tournament MVP Rae Li D'alie scored a game-high seven points including a nasty ankle-breaker that lead to a booming two-pointer to give Italy the lead, 9-7.
The 8th-seeded Italians then rode that momentum all the way to the gold as the former champs never recovered.
"It’s a journey that we started many years ago. With even different players and staff that aren’t here today but are part of this journey," Marcella Filippi said.
"And we inserted new two players and they gave us more than we could’ve expected. The thing that pushed us forward is our heart and we put that in, every game we played, game after game. And then the arena who helped us," she added.
After D'alie, Giulia Rulli scored four points for Italy while Giulia Ciavarella added another three points.
Anna Leshkovtseva paced Russia with four points in a failed bid for back-to-back titles.
France beat no. 1 China, 21-14, to win the bronze medal.
