Renato Ular, Yves Sazon, and the rest of the Marikina Shoemakers impressed in their MPBL debut
Marikina’s first game in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League is, without a doubt, a rousing success.
The debuting Shoemasters had no problem whatsoever up against fellow expansion team General Santos for an 88-81 decision on Tuesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
With that, Marikina is the first team on the board in the 2018 Anta Datu Cup.
The Shoemakers were in control right from tip-off and had a 16-point lead at the half before GenSan battled back to within 50-56 in the middle of the third quarter.
From there, Renato Ular and Yves Sazon restored order for Marikina which uncorked 16 unanswered points to re-establish a 66-50 edge.
Their lead would only increase to as much as 21, 82-61, the rest of the way.
Sazon, a former standout of Philippine Christian University, impressed with a career-high 33 points on top of 10 rebounds and four assists.
Colegio de San Juan de Letran product Ular also added an 11-point, 15-rebound double-double while ex-pro Erwin Sta. Maria scored 18 markers of his own.
Kapamilya star Gerald Anderson was expected to also make his debut, but was sidelined by a hamstring injury.
For the Warriors, Leomar Losentes and Christopher Masaclang fronted the effort with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
