‘Winning attitude’ carries Marikina's Sazon to career night
“Excited ako maglaro eh, kagabi pa lang. Gusto ko talaga manalo, first game. Iba kasi dala ng first game para sa team.”

In the opening match of the 2018-2019 MPBL Anta Datu Cup, Marikina Shoemasters guard Yves Sazon immediately claimed the spotlight, as he dropped a career-high 33 points to go with ten rebounds, helping lead the Shoemasters to an 88-81 win over the GenSan Golden State Warriors, Tuesday evening at the Araneta Coliseum.

For Sazon, the career-best outing was the product of the mentality instilled in them by head coach Elvis Tolentino.

“Ang laging sinasabi ni coach, yung mentality naming, kailangan winning attitude.” Sazon said after the opening day win.

Tolentino and Sazon both transferred to the Marikina expansion team after representing the Navotas Clutch in the 2018 MPBL Anta Rajah Cup.

Sazon also plays for Tolentino with the Philippine Christian University Dolphins.

“Yung last season ko, natuto na ako sa mga mali ko. Dito, iniimprove ko yung mga dapat ko gawin, lalo na sa offense and defense.” Sazon added.

Early on, it was clear that Sazon had the hot hand, as he finished the first half with a game-high 22 markers.

For the 22-year old Pampanga native, getting the opening day win was the motivation for the offensive explosion.

“Excited ako maglaro eh, kagabi pa lang.” Sazon said. “Gusto ko talaga manalo, first game. Iba kasi dala ng first game para sa team.”

If game one was any indication of who’s going to be the go-to-guy for the Shoemasters moving forward, then it’s pretty clear that Sazon is Marikina’s man.

The fact that he’s already familiar with Coach Tolentino’s system surely doesn’t hurt either.

“About sa sistema, compatible talaga, sobra, kay Coach Elvis, ganun naman last season kay Coach Elvis, kaya wala naman masyado adjustment sa Marikina.”

“Yung pakikisama sa new teammates, okay naman lahat. Sa system, no problem.” Sazon added.

Sazon will look to follow up on his career-high outing with another impressive performance as he and the Shoemakers take on the Muntinlupa Cagers on Thursday, June 21st.
