At the end of the 2018-2019 MPBL Anta Datu Cup, the last team standing will be taking home this bad boy...
That is the new and improved MPBL National Championship trophy.
It doesn't look any different from the trophy that the Batangas Athletics took home when they won the inaugural MPBL Anta Rajah Cup, but now, with even more teams looking to hoist the trophy, of course, the MPBL had to raise the stakes a bit.
"Yung trophy, the same lang siya from the last conference, it’s just this time, yung full season natin, it’s an 18-Karat gold trophy siya," said MPBL Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes.
Yup, you read that right. 18-Karat gold.
"It weighs around five kilos, and it was designed and suggested by the good Senator natin."
Here's where it gets even more intense.
Commissioner Duremdes revealed just how much the trophy is worth.
"Napaka-bigat niya, and it’s worth P 10 million."
So, just to recap, at the end of the 2018-2019 MPBL tournament, the National Champions will be hoisting a five-kilogram, 18-Karat gold trophy that's worth a whopping ten million pesos.
How's that for motivation?
Duremdes added that the trophy was locally made, and Senator Manny Pacquiao suggested that it resemble the NBA's Larry O'Brien trophy.
And while Commissioner Duremdes knows that the trophy will indeed be an added motivation for the players, he believes that even more valuable for the winners will be pride.
"It’s an added motivation for the teams, but to me, ang importante dito is yung pride," said Duremdes. "Whatever the result of the tournament, ang mangingibabaw dito ay yung pride ng bawat team, because they’re playing for their cities."
